| MISSIONS IS NOT ABOUT THE MISSIONARY, NOR THE MISSION AGENCY. IT’S ABOUT CHRIST |
Having been born in Brazil in the early fifties, I witnessed
supporting churches excitedly greet us as we arrived from the
foreign field for our furloughs. Sometimes we were met with
welcome banners, sometimes hymns sung as we came into the
airport terminal with our belongings in suitcases and duffle bags.
Smiles, laughter and unwanted kisses still are in the little boy part
of my mind.
A story is told of a missionary returning by ship to the U.S after
many years of foreign service. Few knew that President
Theodore Roosevelt was on that great ocean liner as well. As the
ship docked at New York harbor, the missionary was
overwhelmed with excitement to see so many people, a band,
and cheering. He was soon told that President Roosevelt was on
the ship. Before long, the missionary realized that no one had
come to see him arrive for furlough.
Missions is not about the missionary, nor the mission agency. It’s
about Christ. Our work has to do with God’s Purpose, His
Sovereignty and His Grace. The regeneration of souls that we
see is conceived by God’s Spirit. As it was with Jesus, no human
generates this life. At best, we missionaries are comparable to
midwives, pediatricians, and doctors.
No, it really doesn’t matter if anyone is at the airport when we
arrive in June. It’s a reminder that it’s not about us.

Thank you for your prayers for Vicki´s parents. Mom was
able to return home in time for Christmas. Because of her
hip replacement, various infections and recuperating time in
the nursing facility; she was away from home 7 1/2 months.

Senhor Arlindo´s lung cancer continues to be in remission.
He has lots of ups and downs and presently is experiencing
increasing forgetfulness. Do remember to pray for his
caretakers: his daughter, Marlene, and her husband, Civaldo.

Early in May of last year, Francisca had double bypass
surgery. She has had a long and difficult recuperation. Her
health badly deteriorated a few times. She is praising the
LORD that last week she was able to get outside nearly
every day for a short walk in her neighborhood.

or think, according to the power that worketh
in us, Unto him be glory in the church by
Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world
without end. Amen."
“I became a Christian when I was 9 years old,
in the First Baptist Church of Juazeiro do
Norte. My parents were believers in Christ
and accepted the call to missionary work in
the city of Petrolina. When I completed 11
years of age, I began to work with children.
From then on my spiritual life grew. I also
started working with young people and
women. In 1984, the missionary Claudia Nícia,
came to work here as well. She was a
blessing and had also been called of the
LORD into the ministry. She encouraged me
a lot and I went to the Baptist Seminary in the
Cariri Valley, where I studied for three years
preparing to better serve the LORD. Today, I
am back in Petrolina, widowed, with a
handsome son that God gave to me, Igor
Rafael, who is now 6 years old.”

Thanksgiving week, Jane´s boyfriend, Sean, spent a few
difficult days in ICU with diabetes complications. We are
grateful to the LORD that Sean has gained strength and is
back in his college classes.
